Here's what folks are saying about The Mass live: "Spamatic Jazz/metal band The Mass (are) from Oakland...(and) easily put on the best show of the night. Without a bit of postrock in their entire performance...the crowd was treated to a performance that far outshined the other bands in both originality and presentation. Combining the strongest elements of John Zorn's Naked City, Sweep the Leg Johnny, Ruins, Mr. Bungle, and Fantomas, The Mass not only brought some much needed diversity to the show, they saved it from utter medocrity. Their all encomapssing schizophrenic and irresistable sounds were the definite crowd pleasing elements of the evening. The singer/sax player commanded the stage with an awesome set of vocal chords and breakdown sax parts that could literally be called smooth jazz, while holding the unique pleasure of looking quite a bit like a demented Robert Downey Jr.. All the while, the guitar player held down the fort with solid, impressive, and sometimes very metal sounding guitar work that was never too intrusive. The bass player stalked the stage, randomly screaming and locked into one of the fiercest rhythm sections in the Bay Area with the drummer. In the end, The Mass provided an excellent conclusion to an otherwise lackluster show, and showcased the awesome talents of this promising young band." - West Coast Performer, April 2002
