The Berkeley Slam!
Every Wednesday, 8:30 pm (poet sign up @ 7:30- SHARP)
$7/$5 with student ID (women who slam get in free on the first Wednesday of the month!),
Starry Plough- 3101 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley
If you think you hate poetry, you haven't been to a slam! Performance poetry is
hybrid art form, half writing and a mixture of theatre, stand-up comedy, and dramatic
monologue. Slam is a poetry competition (gasp!) that brings out some of the finest
performance poets in the nation today. Watch as the finest performance poets and
spoken word artists compete for a slot on Team Berkeley each year- the top 5 poets of the
season get a free trip to the annual national competition. Top winners of each slam
accrue points and cash for their efforts. All poets are judged by 5 (random,
lottery-picked) members of the audience! Anyone can sign up for a chance to read
during an open slam!

GenderEnders! with Julia Serano
Thursday, October 6th, 8:30 pm (open mic sign up at 8 PM)
$5-7 (sliding scale), ALL AGES!
Femina Potens- 465 S. Van Ness (@ 16th), San Francisco
GenderEnders is a community-building performance open mic for people of all genders!
Every show features an open mic, a community bulletin board (bring your announcements
and events to spread the word), & phenominal featured talent every month from the trans,
intersexed, or genderqueer community. GenderEnders works to ensure these usually
marginalized voices are heard- "dotting the i's and crossing the t's in the queer
performance community"!
Hosted by spoken word performer, writer, and musician (in the band Bitesize) Julia Serano,
GenderEnders is a one-of-a-kind place where genderqueer, trans, straight, and queer folks can
find a place to express themselves on the mic. The space is welcoming to open mic vets as well as folks
sharing for the first time!
All types of performers are welcome- music, spoken word, hip-hop emcees, dancers,
comedians, performance artists, anything! And happy, well-adjusted folks of all sexualities and genders are welcome as well.
